Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) is a university included in the national “Double First-Class University Plan” and the Jiangsu High-Level Construction University Plan, a university jointly constructed by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People’s Republic of China. Established in —, NJUCM is one of the earliest established universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. Over the last 64 years, NJUCM has trained the first wave of teachers, created the first edition of textbooks and teaching syllabus, produced the earliest academicians in TCM field, made fundamental contribution the establishment and promotion of higher education mode for P. R. China, therefore has been renowned as “the cradle of China’s higher education in Chinese Medicine”.
Located in the historic city Nanjing, NJUCM has Xianlin and Hanzhongmen campuses. Currently, it has nearly — enrolled students of various kinds and sets schools including School of Chinese Medicine, School of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Medicine & Holistic Integrative Medicine, School of Acupuncture and Tuina, School of Regimen and Rehabilitation, School of Nursing, School of Health Economics and Management, School of Artificial Intelligence and Information Technology, International Education College, School of Marxism, School of Medical Humanism, Department of Public Foreign Language Teaching, International Jingfang Institute, The First School of Clinical Medicine, The Second School of Clinical Medicinen and etc., offering 33 undergraduate programs and involving 6 branches of academic disciplines including medicine, management, science, engineering, economics and humanities, initially forming the educational pattern that centers on Chinese medicine while combining Chinese and Western medicines and developing multiple disciplines as its support.
NJUCM now has 1 national key disciplines (first rank), 2 national key disciplines (second rank), 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 2 construction projects and 2 key ranked disciplines of preponderant disciplines of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, 10 key disciplines of Jiangsu Province level, 33 key disciplines of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the P.R.C. NJUCM has two disciplines, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology has been included in the top 1% of Global ESI ranking. Its three major disciplines, Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine have all won A-class disciplines in the Ministry of Education’s fourth evaluation. NJUCM is among the first batch of universities eligible of awarding master and doctoral degrees in China. Now it boasts 4 doctoral programs (first rank) in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Pharmacology, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Nursing. Its degree programs cover all the disciplines (second rank) in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Pharmacology, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine.
NJUCM insists on the students as the center of education, striving to push forward the training mode reform for elite students in Chinese Medicine programs such as the nine-year bachelor to doctor degree program, the 5+3 overall training program for clinical physician. NJUCM has been elected among the pilot universities to conduct the national reform project of Physician Education and Training Program of Excellence and currently it has 3 pilot projects. It has 5 national level characteristic programs, 2 national level pilot projects for overall major reform, 6 national level courses for excellent resources sharing, 2 national level teaching groups, 1 national level talents cultivation mode innovation experimental zone, 3 national level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national level university students off-campus practical education base, 33 national level planning textbooks (as editor-in-chief), 4 national level teaching achievement. It has 3 directly affiliated hospitals, the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine), The Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (The Second Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine), Bayi Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (The PLA Bayi Hospital), and 26 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 4 Clinical Medicine Schools of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, 3 affiliated pharmaceutical company, and over 100 teaching and internship bases of various kinds.
Boasting of strong research capabilities, NJUCM now has 1 National Engineering Research Center for the National Development and Reform Commission, 1 key laboratory for the Ministry of Education, 1 Engineering Research Center for the Ministry of Education, 2 key laboratories at Jiangsu Provincial level, 2 collaborative innovation centers at Jiangsu Provincial level, 6 Jiangsu Provincial level of Engineering Research Center (Engineering Laboratory), 7 Jiangsu Provincial level university key laboratories (including 1 national key laboratory in cultivation), 1 Jiangsu Provincial key laboratory in Marine Science, 1 key research base of philosophy and social science at Jiangsu Provincial level, 4 key research laboratories for State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 national level demonstration center of technology transfer. NJUCM establishes all-around collaboration with Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences to jointly build “New School of Chinese Materia Medica”. NJUCM is among the Key National Ancient Literature Protection Units first approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Education, and serves as a branch of the Chinese Medicine Literature Retrieval Center. Over the past few years, NJUCM has made remarkable achievements in scientific research, receiving 2 awards for Second Class Prizes of The National Scientific and Technological Advance Award, ranking into the national top 100 universities in the year — and — for the total number of projects approved by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC), making it the top Chinese Medicine university in terms of the overall grants approved by NNSFC. The Academic Papers of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, a core Chinse academic journal organized by NJUCM, has been included in the key database of the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) and elected as the top 100 excellent research journals in Chinse universities.
