Why it matters
Around 2,100 of the programs listed on Masar are taught in English. For every one of them the university has to satisfy itself that you can follow lectures, read academic material, and write assessed work in English — which in practice means a certificate from a recognised test, or proof that you were previously taught in English.
If you are applying to a Chinese-taught program instead, this does not apply to you: those require HSK, usually level 4 or 5, rather than an English test.
