Gansu University of Political Science and Law is the only provincial undergraduate college of political science and Law in Gansu Province. It is the earliest provincial undergraduate college of political science and Law in China. Its predecessor was Gansu Provincial Political Science and Law Cadre School founded in —, and gansu University of Political Science and Law was formally established in — to provide higher education. In —, the university obtained the qualification of master's degree awarding unit. In —, it offered master's degree education, and in —, it offered international student education. In the same year, it was identified as the project construction unit of Doctor degree awarding in Gansu Province. It is one of the first batch of national outstanding legal talents education base, the second batch of National Practice education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Base for colleges and universities, and a member of the "Rigg Alliance" of national political and legal colleges and universities. In June —, it was renamed Gansu University of Political Science and Law with the approval of the Ministry of Education.The university has 12 second-level colleges, 9 provincial key research bases for humanities and social sciences, 2 provincial key laboratories, 3 provincial research and innovation teams, 1 provincial think tank, 4 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and 6 provincial teaching teams.

The university has three campuses: Anning West Road campus, Anning Wanxin Road Campus and Lanzhou New District Campus. At present, the university offers 34 undergraduate majors, covering six disciplines including law, management, engineering, literature, economics, and art. Social sciences, management, engineering, and humanities are the main disciplines of the university. It has 3 state-level characteristic specialties, including law, investigation and border defense management, and 13 provincial-level characteristic specialties. Law discipline is the dominant discipline in Gansu Province, while evidence science and business administration are the characteristic discipline in Gansu Province. It has 3 first-level master's degree programs in law, business Administration and cyberspace security, 17 second-level master's degree programs and 4 professional master's degree programs.

The university has strong scientific research capability. In the past five years, 29 provincial and ministerial awards have been awarded for its scientific research achievements, including 1 Award for Outstanding Achievements in Social Sciences of Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, 1 Award for Outstanding Achievements in Social Sciences of The State Ethnic Affairs Commission, 3 first prizes and 6 second prizes for Outstanding Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences of Gansu Province. The university has undertaken 118 scientific research projects above provincial and ministerial level, including 38 projects of national Social Science Foundation and Natural Science Foundation of China. Journal of Gansu University of Political Science and Law was selected as CSSCI Extended edition source journal and Peking University Chinese core journal.

The university gives full play to its disciplinary and professional advantages and actively serves the rule of law construction and local economic and social development. First, we will actively provide practical personnel support for the implementation of the law-based governance of China and the state's strategy of governing Xinjiang, Tibet and border areas. Second, give play to the role of think tank of humanities and social science research base to provide intellectual support for party committees and governments in making decisions; Third, conduct comparative studies on the rule of law in different countries and actively serve the construction of the Silk Road Economic Belt.
