Huaqiao University (HQU) is a comprehensive university, directly under the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of China and jointly run by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People’s Republic of China and the Fujian Provincial People's Government. It is the National Base for Chinese Language Teaching, the National Base for Cultural Quality Education of College Students, the National Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform and the National Demonstration University for Teacher Evaluation Reform.
HQU was established in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, with the approval of former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in —. The first president was Liao Chengzhi, one of the state leaders. The university was once closed in — and rehabilitated in —. In —, HQU was listed as one of China's Prioritized Fostered Universities by Chinese Central Government. Since —, it has been jointly constructed by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the Fujian Provincial People's Government. In —, the former Jimei Overseas Chinese Tutoring School was incorporated into the university and renamed as the Chinese Language and Culture College. In —, Xiamen Campus of the university was officially launched. In —, HQU achieved "Excellence" in MOE’s first Undergraduate Teaching Performance Assessment. In —, the university was selected into the construction plan of first-class universities and first-class disciplines (also named as Double First-Class Initiative) of Fujian Province.
HQU Board of Directors was founded in — with Zhuang Xiquan, Hu Ping, Huang Changxi, Jia Qinglin, Chen Mingyi, Song Defu, Wang Gang successively served as chair of the board. The current Chair of the Board is Cai Dafeng, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Chairman of the China Association for Promoting Democracy. Edmund Ho Hau-wah, deputy chairman of CPPCC and the former chief executive of Macao SAR, serves as the Board's honorary chair.
HQU enjoys over — remarkable teaching and auxiliary staff, among which, more than — are full-time teachers, including 54% with senior titles, 65% with doctoral degrees, 35% with the experience of overseas education, 68% under the age of 45, 6 double-employed academicians, over 100 high-caliber talents including National Leading Scholars, and high-level research teams including innovation teams in key areas supported by the Innovative Talent Promotion Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Educating students both morally and intellectually, HQU aims at producing high-quality talent with innovative spirit, practical ability, global vision and social responsibility. Over — students of all levels have graduated from the university since its establishment, among which around — currently live overseas, mainly distributed in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and countries or regions along the Maritime Silk Road, and are committed to promoting friendship, communication and cooperation between China and those countries. HQU has — full-time undergraduates and — graduates, among which — are students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and over 80 countries and regions. HQU is one of the universities that recruit the largest number of overseas students in China. It currently houses 26 colleges with 90 departments and centers, among which 11 are national first-class undergraduate programs, 9 are provincial first-class undergraduate programs and 16 have achieved international and domestic profession certifications. HQU boasts 4 national first-class undergraduate courses and 35 provincial first-class undergraduate courses and has established about 80 teaching and research platforms at national and provincial levels including national and local collaborative engineering research centers, provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation centers, engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, virtual simulation experiment centers, experimental teaching demonstration centers, etc.
Strengthening the discipline construction, HQU offers 11 categories with a coordinately developed discipline system that combines arts with science, integrates science with engineering and couples engineering with management. There are 8 Doctoral programs of the first-level disciplines, 25 Master's programs of the first-level disciplines, 21 professional Master's programs, and 5 Post-doctoral research centers in the university. Steady progress has been made in its research strength, with 41 state or provincial key disciplines and 17 provincial peak and plateau disciplines, among which Engineering ranks among the top 5‰ and Material Science and Chemistry rank among the top 1% in ESI (Essential Science Indicators).
HQU attaches great importance to academic research and reinforces its capabilities of scientific and technological innovation and cultural innovation. It is one of the universities in Fujian province that enjoy the most projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation every year. The university has also won the National Science and Technology Progress Award and published academic papers in Nature, China Social Science and other journals. It has been ranked in the national Top 100 of the Annual Nature Index for four consecutive years. Two of our professors have been consecutively selected as "Highly-cited Scientists" in the world.
HQU actively carries out social services and promotes the integration and innovation of industry and education to make a contribution to the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects. Taking root in Fujian, the university helps Fujian province achieve all-round high-quality development through efforts including hosting the entrusted legislation project - Fujian Provincial Regulations on Promoting Ecological Civilization Construction, participating in the world heritage applications of Xiamen and Quanzhou, working with the local governments to promote the construction of "the Belt and Road" Qiaoze Garden in Quanzhou and Automobile Town in Xiamen and building high-end learning platforms of "HuaDa Lecture" and "Jimei Lecture". HQU has established cooperation relationships with 8 cities of Chongqing municipality and Fujian province, offered pairing assistance to Putian College and North Minzu University and helped with poverty alleviation in Southwest Guizhou Pilot Area and Gansu Jishishan County.
