Guangdong Ocean University is a provincial key university jointly built by Guangdong Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Natural Resources, a comprehensive marine university with coordinated development of multiple disciplines, an excellent institution in the undergraduate teaching level assessment of the Ministry of Education, and a key discipline building university in Guangdong Province.

The predecessor of the university is the Guangdong Provincial Senior Vocational university of Fisheries, which was founded in — and is the beginning of modern marine aquatic education in Guangdong. The former Department of Fisheries of Jinan University and the former Zhanjiang Branch of South China Institute of Technology (now South China University of Technology) have been incorporated into the university, which was upgraded and developed into Zhanjiang Aquatic College directly under the Ministry of Agriculture in —. In December —, the Zhanjiang Meteorological university, a national key secondary university under the supervision of the State Meteorological Administration, was merged into Zhanjiang Ocean University. In June —, Zhanjiang Ocean University changed its name to Guangdong Ocean University, and in January —, the provincial party committee and the provincial government clarified that Zhanjiang Ocean University would be the host university and would build the Yangjiang campus of Guangdong Ocean University with Yangjiang Municipal Government, the Provincial Department of Education and South China University of Technology.

The university is located in Zhanjiang and Yangjiang, two beautiful seaside cities at the southern end of China's mainland. The university is open to students from 29 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government, with — full-time undergraduate students, graduate students and international students, and — adult higher education students.

The three campuses in Zhanjiang, Hukwang Campus (the main campus, No.1 Haida Road, Ma Zhang District), Xia Shan Campus (No.40 Jiefang East Road, Xia Shan District) and Binhai Campus (No.5 Binhai Avenue Central, Xia Shan District), cover an area of — mu, of which Hukwang Campus is located on the east side of Hukwang Rock World Geological Park, a national AAAA grade tourist attraction. Zhanjiang Campus has College of Fisheries, College of Ocean and Meteorology, College of Food Science and Technology, College of Coastal Agriculture, College of Mechanical Engineering, College of Marine Engineering and Energy, College of Marxism, College of Economics, College of Management, College of Mathematics and Computer Science (university of Software), College of Electronics and Information Engineering, College of Chemistry and Environment, College of Shipping and Maritime Transport, College of Literature and Journalism, College of Law and Politics, College of Foreign Languages, College of College of Chinese Opera and Arts, College of Sports and Leisure, College of Continuing Education, and 19 other colleges.

Yangjiang Campus (No. 1 Luoqin Road, Jiangcheng District) is located west of Luoqin Mountain, one of the eight scenic spots of Yangjiang, and south of the scenic Luoqin Lake, with a total planning area of — mu, and 512 mu of land for the first phase of the construction project, which was completed in June —. The campus has 5 colleges including College of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, College of Materials Science and Engineering, College of Computer Science and Engineering, College of Food Science and Engineering, and College of Business, with 710 students enrolled for the first time. In the second phase, 7 colleges and 30 majors are planned to be built.

There are 83 undergraduate majors, among which there are 11 national first-class undergraduate majors, 5 national specialties and 1 national comprehensive reform pilot majors; 10 provincial first-class undergraduate majors and 28 provincial specialties with advantages.
