Pingdingshan University (PDSU), ratified by the Ministry of Education of China and managed by the Government of Henan Province, is a full-time and comprehensive university. Standing on the Guoding Hill and overlooking the Baigui Lake in Xincheng District of Pingdingshan, PDSU takes pride in its beautiful natural environment and rich humanistic atmosphere.
PDSU is originated from Pingdingshan Normal School that was founded in October —. In August —, junior college classes were approved. Afterwards, Pingdingshan Normal School was renamed as Pingdingshan Normal College in —. In May —, approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education, it was upgraded to be a tertiary education institute and became the current Pingdingshan University. In November —, the qualified assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the Ministry of Education was passed. Actively responding to the national and provincial requirements concerning the classification and development of higher education, PDSUhas been carrying out the in-depth transformational development with various supporting programs, including “Construction Unit for Master’s degree Conferment Project,” “the Pilot University in Transformational Development of Henan Province” and “Exemplary Undergraduate College of Applied Technology in Henan Province.”Inheriting theoperation motto (namely, Morality, Erudition, Factualism and Innovation), PDSU has developed its unique ethos (that is, Rigorous, Realistic, Harmonious, and Striving) and school spirit (namely, Effort, Hardship, Self-improvement, Solidarity, and Devotion). It plays an important role in talent cultivation, scientific research, community commitment, cultural inheritance & innovation, and international exchange & cooperation. Furthermore, PDSU is rapidly advancing the second phase of its construction as an exemplary provincial university.
PDSU owns two campuses at present, covering a total area of — square meters (154.6 hectares). The total teaching equipment is valued at 252 million yuan (RMB). The collection of paper books in the library exceeds more than — copies. The total number of full-time students is over —, with — additional part-time students. There are over — staff, 900 of whom have got Master's or Doctor’s degrees and over 400 teachers are full professors, associate professors, or senior lecturers. Among the teachers, there is one provincially academic/technical leader, 16 provincially exemplary teachers, three provincially famous teaching teachers, (and) one provincially innovative science and technology team. In addition, four staff (members) (have been) selected into a support plan for scientific and technical innovation talents in universities and colleges in Henan Province. A group of distinguished professors and part-time professors have also been recruited by PDSU, including the Fellow for International Eurasian Academy of Science, Yangtze River Scholars, State Council Special Allowance awardees, Chinese Arts and Crafts Masters and other leading talents. The school also has plenty of cultural and athletic facilities, e.g., sports training halls, concert halls, studios, etc.
Active in serving local industries, PDSU has formed such a disciplinary layout that is coordinated among many disciplines, with engineering and other applied disciplines as the main subject. It has 18 teaching units, 55 undergraduate majors,covering nine disciplines including engineering, management, science, humanities, medicine, pedagogy, economics, law, art, etc. PDSU focuses on the construction of a national-level professional group of six majors in electric power information, chemical and environmental, economic management, cultural creativity, teacher education, and medical and health. There are more than 100 provincial teaching quality projects, including one national-levelfirst-classmajor construction site，11 provincial-level first-class major construction sites, one nationally-recognized first-class course, and 31 provincially-recognized first-class courses.
PDSU owns several scientific research institutions and technical bases for professional technology development. It includes five provincial key disciplines of high voltage and communication technology, chemical engineering, ecology, radio and television art, and contemporary Chinese literature, two Henan Provincial Key Laboratories of Henan Central Plains Ancient Ceramics Research Key Laboratory and Henan Province Eco-economical Woody Plant Germplasm Innovation and Utilization Key laboratory, 10 Provincial Engineering Technology Centers, Provincial Engineering Laboratories, and Provincial Engineering Research Centers, one Provincial Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Base, one Post-Doctoral Innovation Practice Base, and one provincial scientific and technological innovation team. Besides, PDSU is the base for several training programs. It simultaneously acts as the Northern-China ceramic product design training base, Henan cultural reform and development talent training base, Henan cultural industry development research base, Henan Intangible Cultural Heritage research base, and Henan creation base of the all-media science popularization center.
Remarkable achievements have been made in collaborative innovation to meet the needs of industries and enterprises. The school and Pinggao Group Co. Ltd jointly carried out the research and production of high-voltage intelligent electrical apparatus, and achieved many products with independent intellectual property rights, which have been successfully applied in such domestic and overseas projects and enterprises as Petro China Shaanxi Changqing Oilfield Company, Pinggao Group Co. Ltd, Eaton Electrical Ltd., and the Project of Transmission of Electricity from Anhui Province to East China. The wireless discharge positioning system IST-701, proposed by PDSU, has already replaced imported products. The multi-channel detection system of substation grounding grid using non-destructive testing technology successfully increases substation grounding grid corrosion detection efficiency by more than ten times, which realizes the precise positioning of the grounding grid corrosion branch without excavation and enables state-of-the-art substation grounding grid corrosion detection technology. Together with the China Academy of Forestry and Henan Province Forestry Administration, PDSU has built up a key Laboratory of Ecological Restoration of Hilly Areas, an AcademicWork Station and postdoctoral research & development base for Ecological Restoration of Hilly Areas, a forestry industry public welfare project test base under China’s State Forestry Administration (SFA). Ithas joined the China Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Network sponsored by Biodiversity Committee of China Academy of Sciences (CAS) and has completed a series of national, provincial and municipal key projects, making contributions to Henan’s ecological environment protection, reasonable utilization of resources and sustainable development. Funiushan Culture Circle Research Center brings together domestic and foreign experts to conduct an in-depth study of the quintessential cultural around the area. A series of academic works have been published, high-level films and television programs have been made, and some TV shows have been set up with local mainstream media, which help the exploration, inheritance and innovation of the regional culture. The project onimitation technique ofthe Tang Dynasty Junware, undertaken by the Ceramic Research Institute in PDSU, successfully restores the production technology lost for over one thousand years and fills a gap in knowledge in this field. These achievements furtherpromote the establishment ofLushan Colored Porcelain (also called Tangjun Porcelain, meaning Tang Dynasty’s Jun Porcelain) Industrial Park in Lushan, a town in Pingdingshan.PDSU has also published the "Thirteenth Five-Year" national key book “The Complete Works of Chinese Ceramic Sculptures in the 20th Century”, with 12 volumes in total, containing more than — pieces of representative kilns in mainland and Taiwan regions in the 20th century. This book conductssystematic and comprehensive research and analysis on the development of Chinese ceramic sculpture, which has filled a gap in the related field. The school’s dragon & lion dance and softball teams have won gold medals in national competitions several times. The dragon & lion team has also been invited to South Korea and Italy for cultural exchanges, which have received much attention and reports from domesticand foreignmedia. PDSU’s Court Music Play reproduces the ritual and musical culture of the palace of ancient Ying State (now the City of Pingdingshan) at the Fifth Beijing Traditional Music Festival, drawing extensive media attention worldwide.
