Hankou University is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive private undergraduate college approved by the Ministry of Education. The university was founded in —, formerly known as Hankou Branch of Central China Normal University. In —, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and the application of the People's Government of Hubei Province, Hankou College was renamed hankou College. It is one of the first 17 universities in China to be transformed from an independent college into a private undergraduate university. In —, it was approved by the Provincial Department of Education to be the first of 32 colleges of the same kind in Hubei province to enroll in the second college, and it is also one of the first private colleges in Hubei province to jointly enroll and cultivate master's students.
