Inner Mongolia university of science and technology is located in the steel city of the first batch of national civilized city, beautiful grasslands, baotou, formerly known as was established in —, baotou iron and steel industry and baotou engineering schools, belong to the former ministry of metallurgical industry, the two schools merged to form baotou engineering, —, in — changed its name to baotou iron and steel institute, the ranks of Inner Mongolia autonomous region in —, In —, Inner Mongolia Coal Industry School was merged into Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology and was renamed Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology in —. The university has now developed into a multi-disciplinary university with metallurgy, mining, coal and rare earth as its features, with engineering as its main focus and coordinated development of engineering, science, liberal arts, management, economics, law, art and education, integrating postgraduate education, undergraduate education, higher vocational education, continuing education and overseas students education.

The university has 20 teaching units such as colleges, departments and centers.
