About the university
Located in Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and a famous historical and cultural city, more than 400 kilometres from Beijing, Inner Mongolia University is the first comprehensive university founded by the Party and the State in an ethnic minority region after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The university was founded in — with the then Vice Premier of the State Council and Chairman of the Autonomous Region, Mr. Ulanfu, as its first President (—-—), Mr. Yu Beichen, former Deputy Director of the Department of Comprehensive Universities of the Ministry of Higher Education, as its Vice President, and Mr. Li Ji Dong, a member of the Academic Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a famous biologist, a first-class professor of Peking University and a doctor of Yale University, to teach at the university and as its Academic Vice President. The Party and the government selected a group of renowned academic leaders and academic cadres from a dozen famous universities in China, including Peking University, to form a high-level faculty in the early years of the university, bringing with them the long-established tradition of governance and the noble university spirit, which laid a solid foundation for the subsequent development of the university and its excellent academic style.
The university was established as a national key university in —, granted the right to confer doctoral degrees in —, approved as a key institution in the national 211 Project in —, and became a "provincial-ministerial" university under the Ministry of Education of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in —. In —, it was selected as one of the national universities under the "Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Plan for Universities in Central and Western China" ("one province, one university"), in —, it was selected as one of the national universities for the construction of first-class disciplines, and in —, it became a university jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In —, it was selected as a national university for the construction of first-class disciplines, and in —, it became a university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The university consists of the main campus, the College of Transportation and the Manzhouli College, as well as an independent college, the College of Entrepreneurship. There are 21 colleges in the main campus. The university also runs the People's Hospital of Inner Mongolia University, the Middle School of Inner Mongolia University and the Primary School of Inner Mongolia University.
The university has 11 disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, management and art, and has two national key disciplines in Chinese minority languages and literature and zoology, and one national key cultivation discipline in ecology. There are 13 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 24 first-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 2 second-level disciplines authorized for master's degrees, 15 professional degrees authorized for master's degrees, and 8 post-doctoral research stations. Biology has been selected as a national "double first-class" discipline, while Biology, Ecology, Chemistry, Ethnology, Chinese Language and Literature (Mongolian Language and Literature) and Chinese History have been selected as autonomous regions "double first-class" disciplines.
The university is approved by the Ministry of Education as a national innovative experiment program for university students, an innovation and entrepreneurship training program school, the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and the first batch of national pilot schools for first aid education. There are now 83 undergraduate majors, 130 undergraduate teaching laboratories and 136 on-campus and off-campus teaching practice training bases. There are four national bases for basic science research and teaching talent training, one base for the Ministry of Education's Basic Discipline Top-notch Student Training Program 2.0, one national base for cultural quality education of college students, one national base for cultivating excellent grassroots legal talents in western China, one national pilot program for comprehensive reform, two national experimental zones for talent training model innovation, seven national specialties, 33 national first-class The university has 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centres, 2 national off-campus practice education bases, and 2 pilot virtual teaching and research laboratories of the Ministry of Education.
The university has — students in various categories. Among them, — are undergraduates, 947 are doctoral students, — are master's students and 432 are international students. Since the establishment of the university, a number of outstanding alumni have emerged, such as Xu Rigan and Liu Yao, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhang Jie and Zhao Jincai, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
There are — teaching staff in the university. Among them, — are teaching and research staff, 310 are professors and 459 are associate professors; — are teaching and research staff in the main campus, 77.64% of whom have doctoral degrees, 294 are professors and 403 are associate professors. There are two Distinguished Professors under the "Yangtze River Scholar Award Scheme" of the Ministry of Education, one recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, six national "Four Youth Talents", and three "Ten Thousand Talents Plan". 3 leading talents in philosophy and social sciences, 2 leading talents in science and technology innovation, 8 people from the National "Hundred Million Talents Project", 7 people from the New Century Excellent Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education, 12 young and middle-aged national experts with outstanding contributions, 2 people from the National Teaching Master Award, 2 people from the National Outstanding Professional and Technical Talents, and 58 experts who enjoy the governmental 58 experts receiving special allowances from the State Council. The University has been selected as one innovation team in the key areas of the Ministry of Science and Technology's Innovation Talent Promotion Plan, two research teams under the Ministry of Education's "Yangtze River Scholars and Innovation Team Development Plan", two teams of the National Advanced Group of Professional and Technical Talents, and two members of the State Council Discipline Review Group. There are 3 members of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, 14 members of the Teaching Steering Committee of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, 1 member of the Teaching Steering Committee of Health Education in National Universities, and 1 member of the Teaching Steering Committee of Vocational Education of Ethnic Skills. There are 10 winners of the Outstanding Talent Award of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 42 experts with outstanding contribution of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 2 outstanding teachers of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 2 outstanding teachers of ideological and political theory courses of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 120 candidates of "Grassland Talent" project of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 120 candidates of "New Century 321 Talent Project" of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and 3 teachers of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. 69 candidates for the "New Century 321 Talent Project". There are 19 science and technology innovation teams and 25 teaching teams in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and 23 innovation teams in "Grassland Talent" project in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The university has 1 State Key Laboratory jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science, 1 National Local Joint Engineering Research Centre, and 13 key research platforms at ministerial level (including 10 in science and technology and 3 in humanities and social sciences) in the fields of Mongolian studies, ethnology, biology, ecology and chemistry, etc. There are 47 key laboratories, engineering technology research centres and key research bases for humanities and social sciences in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (34 in science and technology and 13 in humanities and social sciences). Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the university has completed 607 national and ministerial research projects in science and technology, 688 new projects have been approved, and 68 national major projects in natural science such as the National Key Research and Development Programme and the National Science and Technology Support Programme have been hosted or undertaken. It completed 936 scientific research projects in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, with — new projects approved. It was awarded the second prize of the National Technology Invention Award, 41 Natural Science Awards and Science and Technology Progress Awards of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and — projects in humanities and social sciences, including 18 major projects and 15 key projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China, 3 major research projects in humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, and 1 major commissioned project. The university received 5 awards for outstanding achievements in scientific research in higher education (humanities and social sciences) from the Ministry of Education (including 3 second-class awards and 2 third-class awards), 288 government awards for outstanding achievements in philosophy and social sciences in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (including 19 first-class awards), 1 third-class award for innovative achievements in theoretical and policy research of the United Front Work in China, 1 third-class award for outstanding achievements in the fourth national ethnic studies, and 2 second-class awards for theoretical research on civil affairs policies in China. Second Prize. One third prize of the Social Science Research Achievement Award (Research Report Category) of the National People's Committee. Three disciplines, namely chemistry, engineering and environmental/ecological sciences, were ranked in the top 1% of the global ESI.
