Yantai University is located in Yantai, a national historical and cultural city and the best charming city in China, and is a key comprehensive university in Shandong Province. The university was founded in — with the support of Peking University and Tsinghua University. With the Yellow Sea to the east and the green hills to the west, the university has a beautiful environment and pleasant climate, and is the closest to the sea and has the longest coastline in China.
The university was officially enrolled in — and became an authorized unit of master's degree in —. in March —, the former Shandong Provincial School of Building Materials Industry and the former Shandong Provincial School of Fisheries were merged into Yantai University with the approval of Shandong Provincial Government. in —, the university was approved as the first batch of construction units of Shandong Provincial Famous University Project, and in the same year, it was approved to serve the national special needs of doctoral talent training project, and in —, it became a provincial and municipal university. "In —, the university was awarded the qualification of postdoctoral program and selected as a high-level university of Shandong Province In —, the university is qualified for post-doctoral recruitment and selected as a high-level university with "strong characteristics", and two disciplines of law and pharmacology are selected as "advantageous and characteristic disciplines" in Shandong Province. Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Engineering and Material Science have been ranked in the top 1% of the global ESI.

At present, the construction of Yantai University Science and Education Park has been started in Yantai Development Zone, with a planned area of — mu and a planned construction area of — square meters.
