About the university
Xinyang Normal University, abbreviated as XYNU, is located in Xinyang City, Henan Province. It is the first undergraduate university established in Henan Province after China’s reform and opening-up and is one of the two key normal universities in Henan Province. It is a shining higher education landmark in the Dabie Mountains region. The renowned social activist and educator Fei Xiaotong praised it as the “cradle of teachers.” It is also acclaimed as “the most beautiful university in Henan Province,” “a university set in a garden,” and “a great university to study freely amid green waters and mountains.” The university is a member of the Alliance of Universities in the Revolutionary Old Area of the Dabie Mountains. The institution has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as a national model university for innovation and entrepreneurship. It has been included in the list of Henan Province’s characteristic key discipline construction universities and is a prospective unit for the second batch of national language promotion bases.
The university was founded in July —, initially named the Xinyang Branch of Kaifeng Teachers College (now Henan University). In December —, it was approved by the State Council to become an undergraduate institution and renamed Xinyang Teachers College. In June —, it was authorized by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to grant master's degrees. In —, it was approved as a provincial pilot unit for doctoral degree authorization under the “13th Five-Year Plan.” In —, it was designated as a key provincial unit for doctoral degree authorization cultivation. In June —, the Ministry of Education approved the renaming of Xinyang Teachers College to Xinyang Normal University.
As of March —, the university has three campuses: Tanshan, Huaihe, and Xinyang Institute of Technology, covering an area of more than — mu, with a total campus building area of 1.08 million square meters. Its library houses — printed books and 4 million electronic books. The university comprises 24 colleges offering 80 undergraduate programs. It holds 15 first-level master’s degree-granting disciplines and 17 types of professional master’s degree categories. The staff comprises over — faculty members, and there are a total of — full-time students enrolled.
