Northeast Petroleum University (formerly known as Northeast Petroleum Institute and Daqing Petroleum Institute) is located in Daqing, Heilongjiang Province. NEPU, which was founded in —, is an engineering-based institution that promotes the growth of engineering, science, management, liberal arts, economics, law, education, and art. NEPU was designated as one of the 88 national essential universities in —. Heilongjiang Province, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation collaborated to build NEPU altogether. In Heilongjiang Province, NEPU is a significant high-level university.

NEPU began admitting students in —, received permission to offer a master's degree in —, and permission to confer a doctorate in —. The school has 66 undergraduate majors and 23 higher vocational majors. There is a 10-gigabit campus network, and the library has 2.64 million books and 16 kinds of data resources. There is a national university science park. The university has received two national teaching accomplishment awards for its excellence in undergraduate teaching level evaluation. The Ministry of Education has approved three new engineering research and practice projects at NEPU, one new liberal arts research and reform practice project, seven first-class national-level and 33 provincial-level undergraduate courses, and one national-level and one provincial-level ideological and political demonstration course. NEPU received several honors, including the Provincial Teaching Achievement Award and the National Excellent Textbook Award.

The scientific research results completed by NEPU have won 15 national science and technology awards, including one particular national science and technology progress award, one first prize, eight second prizes, and two third prizes; two second prizes for national technological invention; and one second prize in natural science. In addition, NEPU won the He Liang He Li Fund Science and Technology Progress Award and the Chinese Patent Gold Award. Since the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," four national 973 program projects, four national 863 program projects, four national science and technology support projects, and 206 national natural science foundation projects have been approved (including five key projects and one major project), 16 social science fund projects, 6 science and technology projects of the Ministry of Education, and 17 humanities and social sciences projects of the Ministry of Education, for a total of 1.814 billion yuan in total scientific research funding. NEPU won 67 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievement awards, including 3 first prizes for natural sciences, 2 first prizes for technological inventions, and 5 first prizes for scientific and technological progress; 26 provincial social science outstanding scientific research achievements, including 5 first prizes; — patents were authorized. During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, teachers at NEPU published — high-level papers, including — SCIE papers, 431 EI papers, and 907 Chinese core journal papers.
