About the university
Located in Zhengzhou, the provincial capital of Henan Province, Henan University of Animal Husbandry and Economy was founded in — through the merger of Zhengzhou College of Animal Husbandry Engineering (established in —) and Henan College of Commerce (established in —). It is a provincial public full-time ordinary undergraduate university approved by the Ministry of Education and sponsored by the People’s Government of Henan Province.
Covering a total area of more than — mu, the university comprises three campuses — Longzihu, Yingcai and Beilin — and three science and education bases, with a total construction area of — square meters. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment stands at 287 million yuan, and the library houses 3.069 million printed books. The university has built 506 laboratories and training venues, including 28 provincial-level R&D platforms, one Henan Demonstration Base for College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice, one Henan Big Data Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base, and 398 off-campus training bases.
The university has a faculty of over — members, including 118 professors and 442 associate professors; — teachers hold master’s or higher degrees (among whom 510 are PhD holders), and 786 are dual-qualified teachers. The university consists of 23 secondary teaching units offering 57 undergraduate programs. Aligned with the animal husbandry, industry and commerce industrial chain, it has formed an interdisciplinary academic and program system centered on four major program clusters: animal production, food engineering, information technology and economics & management, featuring integrated development of animal husbandry, industry and commerce with interdisciplinary innovation. It owns 1 national-level first-class undergraduate program development site (Animal Science), 11 provincial-level first-class undergraduate program development sites including Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering, and Financial Management, as well as 4 provincial comprehensive reform pilot programs. Agriculture, Finance and Veterinary Medicine are key disciplines of Henan Province. The university has successfully developed the new breed “Huanghuai Mutton Sheep”, filling the gap in mutton sheep breeding in Henan Province.
The university continues to deepen education and teaching reform and innovate talent training models. It has developed distinctive training models including “dual-subject integrated management”, “four-stage dual-cycle mechanism” and “five-stakeholder collaborative school-enterprise cooperation”. It has won 24 provincial teaching achievement awards, built 1 provincial demonstration center for curriculum ideological and political education, 2 provincial teaching teams for curriculum ideological and political education, and 9 provincial model and demonstration courses for curriculum ideological and political education. It has constructed 2 national first-class undergraduate courses, 33 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 21 national and provincial planning textbooks, 14 provincial excellent grassroots teaching organizations, 1 provincial virtual simulation center, 3 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching curriculum groups, 18 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, 2 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and 14 provincial off-campus practical education bases.
To support its integrated academic system of animal husbandry, industry and commerce and talent cultivation, the university has established 67 scientific research platforms at all levels such as Henan Key Laboratory for Healthy Breeding and Efficient Reproduction of Livestock and Poultry, 8 provincial innovative science and technology teams and 49 university-level research and innovation teams. Up to now, the university has obtained 45 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 6 sub-projects of the National Key R&D Program, 4 major special projects of Henan Province, 12 key R&D special projects of Henan Province, 904 provincial and ministerial research projects and 328 horizontal projects. Faculty have received 44 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research awards, obtained 214 national invention patents, and published more than — academic papers. The university serves as the standing council unit of the National Animal Husbandry Science and Technology Innovation Alliance, vice chairman unit of Henan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Society, vice chairman unit of Henan International E-commerce Association, and chairman unit of Cold Chain Logistics Branch of Henan Refrigeration Society. It runs a postdoctoral workstation and has been approved as a demonstration incubation unit for technology transfer and an authorized institution for technology contract registration in Henan Province.
Leveraging its disciplinary strengths and responding to the demands of industries and enterprises, the university follows the working guideline of “establishing mechanisms, creating models, pursuing tangible results and building brands”. Adhering to the philosophy of seeking cooperation through service, seeking support through service and pursuing development through contribution, it has built a new “311” social service system. By integrating five major resources — talents, scientific research, technologies, think tanks and culture — the university has set up integrated animal husbandry-industry-commerce service teams with dual team leaders and carried out the program of “Hundreds of Experts Assisting Hundreds of Villages and Enterprises”. It has established three integration models: university-local integration featuring “university + platform + government”, industry-education integration linked by industrial alliances (colleges), and university-enterprise cooperation carried out via specific projects, so as to advance in-depth integration of disciplines, education and industry in an all-round way. The university strengthens coordinated linkage among governments, enterprises and universities. It cooperates with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Henan Province, local governments and leading enterprises to build research institutes and rural revitalization service platforms, conducting applied research targeting key industrial challenges. Partnering with leading enterprises including Huawei, Muyuan and Shuanghui, the university co-establishes modern industrial colleges and characteristic industry colleges. Through team co-construction, resource sharing, joint talent cultivation and coordinated development, it realizes two-way empowerment: supporting enterprises, revitalizing villages and strengthening industries, as well as improving teaching, boosting research and promoting employment, thus facilitating high-quality development of education and regional economy.
Committed to the strategy of “bringing in” and “going global”, the university actively expands channels for external exchanges and advances international cooperation. It maintains close ties with more than 50 universities and research institutes in 27 countries and regions including Ireland, Australia, the Netherlands and Canada. It runs 1 undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, 1 undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education program, 2 undergraduate Sino-foreign curriculum cooperation programs and 5 junior-college Sino-foreign cooperative education programs. The university provides abundant platforms to support overseas exchange and study for faculty and students. It actively carries out joint international academic research and hosts several platforms: the Ireland Research Center (a country and regional research center filed with the Ministry of Education), the “Feed Resource Innovation and Utilization Studio” under Henan International Talent Cooperation Program, two international joint laboratories — Henan International Joint Laboratory for Ruminant Nutrition and Feed Resource Development and Henan International Joint Laboratory for Prevention and Control of Animal Intestinal Diseases. The university is a construction unit of internationalized characteristic universities in Henan Province and an outstanding collective for foreign education affairs in Henan Province.
